If you have never tried doing a collage now is the time to start. Some people may see collage making as something just for children. However, my experience has been that all ages enjoy Valentines day. The fun starts in making it a personal Valentines collage this can bring a lot of heart felt emotion to the season.

Once you learn how to make a collage you will want to do it often and practice making them for all special occasions in different methods. But the main thing is to start observing collages done by other artist and try incorporating ideas that you have seen in their work.

For example, some people form collages from just pictures they have taken on a vacation. These pictures are arranged on a board and framed for everyone to enjoy their experience.

Just the act of doing the collage is relaxing. I often play music for my students while they are preparing to make a collage. A stressful day is often forgotten while you are making a collage for someone.

Try making a collage for someone on valentines day and become like a child again.

Collage making is a powerful art form that can bring out the beast or beautify the ugly. There are many emotional feelings that can be released and revealed with a collage.

If you are planning to teach collage making to people in pain consider a personal assessment of your attitudes before you instruct and provide critiques for special interest groups.

Recently, a collage workshop for mothers in pain because of special health issues in their family included a challenging collage making theme. Each person was asked to create a collage that reflected a personal dream. Each participant was asked to share their collages and the dream attached.

It was an emotional outpouring that resulted in affirmations, support and encouragement from the instructor and other participants.
Some of the work included bold uses of colors and wild arrangements. Yet, the instructor was careful and sensitive to provide the correct techniques without discouraging any of the moms.
One of the moms refused, initially, to explain her collage which contained images of a new kitchen and appliances. After patient encouragement by the instructor she finally shared her dream. Yet she did not want to take the collage home.

Staff personnel observing the session took the time later to provide the counseling and further support needed. She later had her dream fulfilled and was given a makeover for her kitchen and bedroom.

There are a few questions you could ask yourself before you start. The answers encourage you to reflect and determine if you have the kind of attitude that will help you facilitate an insightful, inspirational and interactive collage.

DO I HAVE…

• An open mind?
• A sense of humor?
• A fun loving and playful mindset?
• A hard working mindset?
• A spiritual awareness?
• An environmental awareness?
• An adventuresome attitude?
• A patient attitude?
• A childlike approach to learning?
• A non-judgmental attitude?
• A creative mindset?
• An original approach?
• An energetic attitude?
• A risk-taking attitude?
• A flexible and open to change attitude?
• An artistic awareness?

Each item does not have to be explored here. But a further discussion will take place in a future article. The main point is that collage making is not just a mindless craft activity. It should inspire creativity and promote challenges.

The bottom line is to go beyond the technique to the transformational!

Resources For Purchasing Collage Materials

One powerful collage theme is motivation! But in order to create a motivational theme you first need to write down a goal. Start with a simple goal that relates to something personal that you are working to toward.
For example, I often have freshmen students in beginning art classes create a goal collage on their major. Where do they want to go? Where do they see their selves after graduation.

Consider the following 3 simple steps.

1. Sort and gather images that will motivate you to reach a goal. For example, if you are remodeling your house only gather those images that relate to that process. This would not be the collage that has images of your last birthday party.

2. Think possible not impossible
It is easy to get discouraged when doing your collage if you think about cost and other limitations. Stay focused on your dream. It can happen. That is why you are creating a collage with a goal in mind.

3. Have fun!
Think out of the box. Mix your images with powerful and inspiring words that will help you achieve your goals,

So write out your goals. Start searching for your images and get started.
